WRITERS GUILD INITIATIVE ANNOUNCES YEAR VII OF
THE MICHAEL COLLYER MEMORIAL FELLOWSHIP IN SCREENWRITING
The Writers Guild Initiative is now in the seventh year of the Michael Collyer Memorial Fellowship, to be awarded in conjunction with the King Family Foundation. The purpose of the fellowship is to provide screenwriting students with the opportunity to develop an original screenplay to assist in transitioning into the professional world of screenwriting.

Each year, one graduating undergraduate senior with an interest in, and talent for, screenwriting as a profession will be awarded a $10,000 fellowship to work on a specific project, mentored by a member of the WGAE. The recipient will be selected from a diverse group of educational institutions and fellowship nominees. Each institution selects one nominee. The nominees will be expected to complete the requirements for an undergraduate degree in the institutional area—English, film, television, communications, or related media studies—that contains the appropriate screenwriting coursework.

Emphasis will be placed on students with feature film projects, which are character driven and personal in nature. In addition to a formal application, each nominee must submit to the faculty member designated at each of the participating institutions:

(1) The first ten pages of an existing original screenplay, plus a 2-3 page short synopsis.

(2) A three page pitch for the feature film to be written during the course of the fellowship.

(3) Two written recommendations from instructors familiar with the nominee’s work.

The faculty member will, in turn, submit the nominated student’s application materials directly to the Writers Guild Initiative for consideration.

All nominees will be asked to register their existing original screenplay submissions, at a cost of $17, with the Writers Guild of America, East. Script registration assists members and potential members of the WGAE to establish the completion date and the identity of their literary property.

This registration fee is the only cost involved in the fellowship nominating process.

The postmark deadline for receipt of nominations by the Writers Guild Initiative is Monday, December 1, 2014. A group of WGAE members selected by the fellowship’s chair will read and evaluate the nominated submissions and select the fellowship recipient on the merits of the materials submitted, with special emphasis given to the proposed project. The selection committee will also assess the nominee’s ability to complete the project within one year’s time.

A mentor, selected by the Writers Guild Initiative board, will be assigned to the fellowship recipient, who will be expected to begin the writing process, based on his/her original three-page pitch, upon graduation from the nominating institution. The mentor will provide feedback, notes and guidance throughout the process, going from development of a more thorough treatment to completion of the script. This will involve a schedule of consultations – either in-person or via telephone, email, or online interface – and draft delivery dates. Fellowship recipients are strongly encouraged to complete their original screenplay within one year from commencement of the writing process.

As per the standard “step deal,” the $10,000 award will be paid out in quarterly increments based on delivery of drafts and approval by the mentor. We will also present and announce the winner at the Writers Guild Awards show in February 2015, in New York City.

All questions and submissions should be directed to Jenna Jackson, Director of Operations & Communications, Writers Guild Initiative, 250 Hudson Street, 7th Floor, New York, NY 10013. Phone: 212.767.7843. E-mail: wgaefoundation@wgaeast.org.
