Follow the Path

Follow the path laid out in the syllabus, and you will complete a feature/pilot/whatever before the end of Senior Project in the spring.  Stray from the path, your odds drop dramatically.  Ask yourself: how close to the path am I?

Also remember, you're supposed to be blogging.  It's one of the primary ways to communicate your process and thinking.  I've been looking at the blogs and am... underwhelmed.

Finally, this process is partially about learning to write on your own, without the constant reenforcement of a standard class structure.  That being said, you should never feel cut off from assistance.  I'm ready, willing, and able to meet with you individually as much as you feel necessary to assist you in your project.  You have the power to make the request any time.  Just e-mail me.  Otherwise, keep on writing.

Did you know?

The SCRP Program gets tons of announcements about internships, writing contests, and events of particular interest to our students.  Professor Abrams forwards these announcements out to you lucky devils and you... well, delete them without looking at them, because that's how you look at official e-mail.

To save you from yourselves, I collect all those announcements and put them on the Internship Clearing House page (mid-named because everything isn't always about internships) on this blog, so you can always find them.  I just reset the page.  Everything on there is current and of interest in Fall 2012.

New Comic Book Industry Class

VSCM 465 ST: The Graphic Novel M 3 – 6 The art of telling a story using pictures has been with us since early man scratched on the cave walls. Political comics, comic books and comic strips have been part of popular culture since the mid 1800s. Recently we have seen the rise of the graphic novel in popular culture. (Rich Johnson). This is a new elective!

This class is only open to Graphic Design and Screenwriting majors.  If you're a Film & Video student who took the Comic Book Writing Class and are interested in this one, e-mail me and we can over-ride you in.  Seating is LIMITED.

Upcoming Event

AN EVENING WITH KAL RUDMAN

He’s been called the Prophet of Pop, the Round Mound of Sound, and the Big Beat. He’s
Kal Rudman – most famously known as the Man with the Golden Ears - and for over
four decades he’s run The Friday Morning Quarterback, one of the most influential trade
publications in the music industry. Come hear from Kal about his life and times and
join us for a reception afterwards. Learn how this local high school teacher became a
legendary music industry mogul.

Presented by:
The Kal and Lucille Rudman Institute for Entertainment Industry Studies (Drexel
University) and the Kal and Lucille Rudman Media Production Center (Temple
University)
Wednesday, May 30th
Bossone Research Center | Mitchell Auditorium
3140 Market Street | 6:30 p.m., reception to follow
RSVP: Karen Curry (karen.curry@drexel.edu)

Kal's work goes far beyond music. Just ask the students at Drexel University, Temple
University, University of the Arts and the Community College of Philadelphia. Kal
and his wife Lucille have sponsored innovative programs at these colleges that pave
the way for the next generation of media leaders. The Rudmans also support the work
of the Police and Fire Departments of Philadelphia, Camden’s Creative Arts Morgan
Village Academy Choir and dozens of other deserving groups. From the classroom, to
the studio, to the classroom again, Kal Rudman’s passion for music and for the city of
Philadelphia has been an inspiration to us all.

Hear the Creative Arts Morgan Village Academy Choir perform. Recently back
from winning second place in the Young Prague Music Competition in the Czech
Republic, they competed against high school and college choirs from eight countries!

Keeping up-to-date

Currently, the first group of seniors who are taking the three-term senior project option are in their third term and all of them are currently working with re-writes at one stage or another.  One of the questions I consistently get when meeting individually with seniors is: how is everyone else doing, where are they, how are their projects?

The answer to all those questions is: check their blogs.  That's why I insist you maintain them, so that everyone else can see how you're doing.  I realize that some of you deal with this on other social media platforms, but... carving out your own individual place on the web can be useful in ways that being a facebook drone can't.  I drop in on everyone's blogs periodically, and so do your individual instructors if you're in workshop, so we're not actually as disconnected as you may feel.

The other points of the blogs are to get you used to writing regularly, writing publicly, and writing something regardless of whether you have an audience.  As I've said in the past, the content of your blog isn't so much what's important, but the fact that you're writing at all.

Ask yourself: have you been keeping up?
